When someone calls 988, they are transferred to a trained counselor close to their location at an accredited crisis center. Some centers are staffed with volunteers and others by paid staff and mental health professionals. The best way to learn what happens for callers in your area is to call the Lifeline yourself and speak to one of the crisis intervention specialists in your area.
